Many people think of yoga and meditation as good stretching and breathing exercises, and that's true – they are. But there’s also some fantastic mental and emotional benefits that come along with these practices.

If your fitness regime currently only includes picking heavy things up and putting them down, it might be time to find a comfortable sitting spot, roll out a mat or blanket, and explore how adding yoga and meditation into your routine can help you live a happier, healthier life.

Yoga and meditation improve cognitive function

Studies have shown that yoga and meditation can increase cognitive function, including improved memory and problem-solving abilities. This is because yoga and meditation increase blood flow and oxygen to the brain, allowing us to process information better - but it's more than that. Regular yoga and meditation practice can also increase brain plasticity, making it easier for your brain to make new connections and grow beyond current limitations.

Yoga and meditation can also improve focus, clarity, and concentration - which helps to 'clear the mind' by reducing distracting thoughts and calming racing minds. When we can quiet the mind, we can gain greater insight into our thoughts and emotions and work through them more effectively.

Yoga and meditation attune us to our bodies

Yoga and meditation can help us become more aware of the subtle changes happening in our body, allowing us to connect with its needs. We begin to pay more attention to the sensations within our body, allowing us to recognize when we feel off balance or out of sorts. By tuning in to these subtleties, yoga and meditation can bring us back into alignment and help us heal physical and emotional ailments.

Consider yoga and meditation as a proactive approach to self-care. When we connect with our bodies, we hear what it's telling us - stress levels, energy levels, hunger cues, etc. Unsurprisingly, yoga and meditation help us care for ourselves more deeply by reducing stress (1), improving sleep quality, and enhancing mood. The more we tune in, the better our body can communicate its needs - giving us greater insight into how to heal and thrive.

This can be especially beneficial when it comes to knowing when to take a rest day versus when to push your body, or what your body is craving in terms of macronutrients. As everyday athletes, our connection with our body is of utmost importance, and being able to dive in deeper with yoga and meditation is an easy way to strengthen that mind-body connection.

Yoga and meditation can complement your already existing fitness routine

You don’t need to completely overhaul your fitness routine to experience the benefits of yoga and meditation. Whether you’re a weightlifter, swimmer, runner, or cyclist, yoga and meditation can make an excellent addition to your daily exercise regime.

Yoga, and its long stretches, and focus on balance and breath work, can even help you to improve your lifting technique by loosening up tight muscles, improving flexibility, and helping you build a more stable base for big lifts.

Meditation, on the other hand, can help you to be more present during your workouts, feel more connected to your body, and reduce stress and anxiety. This is especially beneficial for athletes in maintaining a positive mindset during training, and competitions or games.

Both yoga and meditation can be practiced daily, in as little as 10 minutes. Try adding a quick yoga stretch to your routine post-workout, or a morning meditation before you head off to train.

Yoga and meditation are accessible to everyone

Not only do yoga and meditation provide various benefits, but they're also incredibly accessible practices. You don't need anything fancy – just an open mind and a willingness to try something new.

Whether you practice yoga at home, join a yoga class or attend a meditation retreat, there's something for everyone! If you need somewhere to start, try yoga classes or videos on YouTube - there are plenty of free meditation apps available to get you started, too.
