Have you jumped on the scale and stared down in disbelief? How could you have possibly gained so much weight that quickly? Well, there might be a reason for your weight fluctuations, and the cause may be for reasons you shouldn’t worry about at all.

In this article, we will look at five common reasons you may experience weight fluctuations and how you can prevent or eliminate them (naturally).

Let’s discuss!

1. You Went Out to Eat

Meals simply taste better when you don’t need to prepare and cook them, right? Not to mention there’s zero clean-up involved too! When you eat out, the cooks at the restaurant may add a little more salt to your meal than you’re used to preparing at home. This could even be due to added butter being used when cooking your meal that also contains a high amount of sodium.

Regardless, the added sodium in your meals can cause some pretty dramatic weight fluctuations due to water retention. The good news is that your body will naturally balance out your water, and your weight should gradually return to normal.

2. You Drank a Lot of Water

Drinking a lot of water throughout the day is a good thing. It keeps you hydrated and provides your body and brain with adequate amounts of water to help keep them functioning and working properly.

Unfortunately, consistently drinking so much water can cause weight fluctuations. Like mentioned above, your body will manage your water balance and will eventually flush out the excess.

3. You Haven’t Gone to the Bathroom Lately

A common reason for weight fluctuations is that you simply haven’t gone to the bathroom lately. You may have a full bladder when you hopped on the scale, or you may have some waste moving through the digestive tract that hasn’t come out the other end yet.

No worries! As soon as you go to the bathroom, you may notice that the “extra weight” you were holding onto has been eliminated.

4. You Had a Grueling Workout

Working out is a great way to improve your health, physique, and longevity. One side effect of intense resistance training or even cardio is that your muscle fibers get broken down, which can cause inflammation. This inflammation can cause weight fluctuations by pulling water to the areas of the body that were worked during a workout.

Like most remedies mentioned already, weight fluctuations from your workouts will disappear with time and are not something you should worry about.

5. You Are Stressed

Stress can cause so many reasons for weight fluctuations that it’s absolutely crazy. Increased stress levels can send cortisol (a stress hormone) into orbit and may cause water retention, hunger, and body fat storage. That combination can make your weight go up and down quite frequently. You’ll also experience an increase in ghrelin levels (a hunger hormone), which can cause you to be hungry and never seem to feel satiated.

While easier said than done, a fix would be managing your stress levels by practicing meditation, deep breathing, reading a book in a quiet room, listening to calming music, or channeling your stress in a positive manner to help better manage weight fluctuations.
