If you’re new here, welcome to our monthly series, Band of the Month, where we bring you the best new bands that should be on your workout playlist. This month, we’re featuring the Charleston-based indie band, Stop Light Observations, also known as S.L.O.

The band, which is made up of members William Blackburn (vocals), Noah Jones (keys), Will Mahoney (guitar), James Rubush (guitar), Cam Wescott (bass), and Oleg Terentiev (drums) got its start back when the members were in high school.

“One of our friends saw a video of Willy B singing a song on Facebook,” explains guitarist Will Mahoney about lead vocalist William Blackburn. “They reached out and started writing music together, and playing local venues in Charleston.”

From there, the band played together throughout the members’ college years, recording their first album and beginning to tour the country. After going through a few changes and adding new members, S.L.O. has grown into the band they are today with almost half a million monthly listeners on Spotify alone.

Mahoney says that getting to “share our music around the country with fellow musicians we really believe in,” as well as “sharing the stage with members from multiple other projects and collaborating toward an evolving sound” has been the band’s product achievement so far.

Inspired by artists like Frank Ocean, Ray Charles, The Rolling Stones, and even Billie Eilish, S.L.O. will be your jam if you typically enjoy something with a little bit of an alternative vibe. Here are five songs to get you started:

  1. 2young
  2. 13bullets (pt.1)
  3. how do you feel?
  4. Trajic Majic
  5. 57Chevy

You can listen to S.L.O.’s entire discography here, follow them here, or check out their upcoming tour dates here. Check back next month for another new Band of the Month!
