The gym – it’s a place many of us love, but sometimes, we just don’t have the time to make it there. Luckily, you don’t need a gym full of equipment to prioritize your health. All you need is a little bit of space at home, and you’re on your way to a killer workout.

Now you might find yourself thinking there’s no way you can get a good workout from home, especially if you have limited to no equipment – but that’s where you’re wrong.

At-home workouts can actually be incredibly effective when it comes to building muscle and sculpting your body. They’re also great if you have a packed schedule, travel often, or just don’t want to deal with waiting around for machines at the gym. To get the most out of your at-home workouts, we asked home workout expert and trainer Stacey Roberts for her top tips for maximizing muscle growth from the comfort of your own home. Here’s what she had to say.

1. Use Household Items

If you think you have no fitness equipment around the house, think again. Roberts points out that “most people have items around the house that can be used to maximize [at-home workouts] and target different muscle groups.” She suggests using anything from “chairs, stools, benches, steps, counters… there are so many things.”

Smaller household items can also be used for upper body exercises, like gallon jugs of water, cans of soup, or a container of laundry detergent. It might not be pretty, but hey, it’s effective!

2. Make Your Workouts Work for You

Workouts are not one-size-fits-all, and Roberts stresses the importance of finding programs that don’t treat them as such. “Look for workouts that offer options and modifications so you can make it work for you,” she says.

Regardless of your fitness level and goals, there’s a way to maximize your at-home workout. Roberts’ Instagram videos (or YouTube, if you prefer a larger screen) do a great job of this if you’re not sure of where to start.

3. Slowly Build Your At-Home Collection

Purchasing at-home fitness equipment is completely optional, but it can be a great way to give yourself more options. Roberts recommends investing in a few items like resistance bands and dumbbells. “As you’re able to invest in equipment, I think resistance bands are a great tool. I recommend a fabric with grips for the lower body, and latex for the upper body.” These ones from Hope Fitness Gear are her go-to bands, and her discount code fitnessmomness will get you 20% off.

She continued, saying “you can use them [resistance bands] in a variety of ways, and they are light and compact which makes them great to travel with.”

Roberts also suggests adding a set of dumbbells. “They can be pricey, but just add a set here and there where you can, to slowly build a collection.”

Home workouts aren’t for everyone, and they can take a little adjusting to if you’re used to spending your days at the gym. However, there’s no denying that they can be extremely beneficial, and as Roberts notes, it really just boils down to finding ways to work out that work for you.

“Finding ways to workout that you enjoy is key,” she says. “Something you hate will never be sustainable.”
