How to Quickly Recover from a Tough Workout

Working out is only half the battle. Here's how to take care of yourself after the final rep.

Working out can be challenging, but the real battle begins after your last rep. Knowing how to recover from a tough workout is not always easy. The good news is that with the proper post-workout routine, you can quickly recover and keep up with your fitness goals. 

Take Time to Cool Down

Your body needs time to cool down after an intense workout, and so does your mind. Don't rush off as soon as you finish your last set; instead, give yourself a few minutes of gentle stretching or walking. These activities clear any lactic acid buildup in your muscles and help mitigate soreness. They also give you time to recover and mentally prepare for the rest of your day. Additionally, taking time to cool down in these ways helps return your heart rate and body temperature to normal ranges.

A typical cool-down should last about 5-10 minutes and include stretching and breathing exercises. Try stretching your arms, neck, and legs for 20-30 seconds each. Take deep breaths through your nose and out through your mouth as you relax into each stretch. This routine will help you transition from workout mode to relaxation mode in no time.

Rehydrate Your Body

Staying hydrated is essential for recovery after exercise, so make sure you drink plenty of water before and after working out. Experts recommend eight 8-ounce glasses daily to maintain proper hydration. However, your body may need more fluids if you work out for longer than an hour or in a hot environment. Electrolyte drinks like Gatorade Zero or Hydrate Elite are great for replenishing lost electrolytes during intense sweating sessions. 

Hit the Sauna

The sauna can be hugely beneficial in post-workout recovery. Studies have shown that 30 minutes in an infrared sauna after a workout decreases muscle soreness and boosts recovery thanks to improved circulation. By boosting your circulation, your body is able to more efficiently pump nutrient- and oxygen-rich blood through your body, thus speeding up muscle recovery. 

If you don’t have access to a sauna, a hot bath or shower has been shown to produce similar benefits. 

Eat Nutritious Food

Nutrition plays a crucial role in fitness recovery - in fact, eating healthy foods after exercise helps replenish depleted energy stores and repair damaged muscle fibers broken down during physical activity. Try opting for nutrient-dense snacks such as nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables. For an optimal post-workout snack, consider a few of these choices that meet all the essential criteria:

  • A smoothie made with whey protein, fruit, and vegetables
  • Whole-grain toast and eggs
  • A handful of mixed nuts and dried fruit, oatmeal with almonds
  • Yogurt, berries, and granola

Few people enjoy feeling exhausted after a hard workout session. Fortunately, simple steps can help speed up recovery and get you back on your feet. Start by cooling down properly once your workout is over—this could mean taking a few minutes to perform gentle stretches or walking around the block. Drinking plenty of water (and a sports drink if necessary) will help replenish lost fluids and electrolytes. For bonus points, you can hit the sauna or the whirlpool for a little post-workout muscle recovery. Finally, fuel up with nutritious meals that include carbohydrates and protein for maximum benefit—and don't forget to enjoy every bite! With these steps in place, recovering from even the most challenging workouts should be no problem at all.
